On the 16th of june 2017, A Sud in collaboration with Cesfor and Collettivo Mixité organised a day of public event in Rome, last multiplyer event of the COMPASS project.
The councilor of the Municipality of the City Hall II Rino Fabiano opened the morning activities, held at the Sala della Partecipazione in San Lorenzo, an iconic place for participatory urban regeneration process in the neighborhood.
The first speaker, Lucie Greyl from A Sud, presented goals and results achieved by the COMPASS project, stressing on the importance of a cross-disciplinary background for the new professionals.
Pablo B. Tempesta from Cesfor, COMPASS project partner, described COMPASS’ open educational resources: the curriculum and the methodological guidance of the interdisciplinary course.
During the second part of the morning the roundtable on bottom-up revitalization of public spaces took place.
The first speech, from Carlo Cellamare, Professor of urban planning at “La Sapienza” University of Rome, stressed on the meaning of participation and bottom-up processes, focusing on the importance of the communication with local stakeholders in order to engage citizens in the care of public spaces.
The following speech, by the Arch. Paolo Robazza from BAG - Beyond Architecture Group, described some examples of citizens’ engagement in tactical urbanism activities led by BAG in the last ten years.
The third speaker, Claudia Mattogno, Professor of urban planning at “La Sapienza” University of Rome, presented Greening San Lorenzo, a project hypothesis for a green network in San Lorenzo neighborhood. The idea considers the involvement of professionals, residents and associations in the management of local green areas.
The successive speech was from Arch. Giorgia Scognamiglio and Fulvia Calcagni, two representatives from Collettivo Mixité, a group of professionals born to put into practice the skills accomplished during the COMPASS course. They introduced the project “Passa a Largo”, an experimentation of urban regeneration addressed to an neglected park in San Lorenzo area (where the afternoon activities took place). During the speech they highlighted the complexity of the process and the importance of collaboration with local administrations.
Another experimentation led by COMPASS project’s participants was presented by Petra Andric, co-ordinator of the COMPASS project for the Croatian organization DOOR. The project involved the regeneration of Pavilion 15 of the Zagreb Fair complex, a protected cultural heritage but abandoned today. The proposal focused on the installation of an ecological market.
Additional inputs were given by Fabrizio Rostelli from LABSUS Association, that focused on the possibility of using legal instruments to facilitate the collaboration between administrations and citizens for the shared management of urban common goods. In fact, LABSUS collaborated with Bologna administration in 2014 to the elaboration of a specific Regulation.
The last speaker, Maurizio Moretti from ADLM Architetti – Città Ibrida, contributed with a reflection on the role of the architect within urban regeneration processes. According to Arch. Moretti a capable architect should be able to include into its projects the dynamism the city and the needs expressed by the citizens.
During the afternoon the location of the final event of COMPASS project was Largo Settimio Passamonti, a park subject to physical degradation. The purpose of the meeting was to share with the users perceptions and suggestions about the area and imagine together a new organization of the spaces.
First, participants were invited to freely discover the park and track feelings and perceptions during the way. After that, they were involved in a collective mapping workshop, where they shared ideas and proposals.
